Are Giants Falling From The Sky Yet?

We have all heard the warning “be careful what you wish for”. Stephen Sondheim reminds us, using the most basic of story forms that wishes have consequences, in his musical Into the Woods. Sondheim brings together several well-known fairytales, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Cinderella and Rapunzel into a funny and poignant musical yarn for adults.

The lasting lesson is that each of the characters want something more from life, something that they believe they lack, that this will make their lives complete.  By the end of the first act they have all had their wishes granted and should thus be living happily ever after. However, this is the real world and everything has a consequence.

The paths we choose and the manner in which we attempt to attain our desires have an impact on others and ourselves. This is obviously not a new idea, though it would seem that the concept of actual accountability is something that many adults will do almost anything to avoid and ignore. Take the Epstein files and those in ‘elite’ powerful circles who are caught up in this vile network of villainy, including ‘our own’ royal family, politicians and businessmen. The similarities with fairytale characters is remarkable.

The arrogant entitlement of princes, the scheming consumption of the wolf, the wicked stepmother enslaving children, the witch locking away a child, the baker and his wife so desperate for their own happiness that they will do anything. The foolish Jack who will steal to impress, not simply survive and will sell his best friend for a few beans. The vacuous stepsisters who delight in despise and the steward “I don’t make policy, I just carry it out”.  The young girls, becoming young women, who are prevented from exploring who they are and might be. Jack’s widowed mother, frustrated by her inept son and struggling to survive in a system that actually does not reward hard work.

Fairytales were always meant to be broad warnings about life, identifying common fears and making light of them. The journey to adulthood is far from an easy one, we all go into the woods and despite healthy feelings of anxiety tell ourselves that “the woods are just trees, the trees are just wood”. Denial, as any therapist will tell you, is an incredibly powerful force.

Still, we live at a time when liars are in power (or seek it) and will do whatever they can to protect their own interests and have little, if any,  regard for yours and mine. Truth has become shaped by those who own the looking glass, poisoned apples are sold by the basket. Vanity, greed, envy and power have welcomed hatred and truth is the victim that lies centre stage whilst stepped over, around and ignored.

We all have an ability to resist reality, we are all capable of drawing from the deep well of denial, but a proper conversation about your values and hopes for life means confronting some truths, choices, paths and crossroads. Your financial plan might be a map in a deeply flawed Kingdom, but you still get to make the choices, select the path and decide what is important, necessary and actually fulfilling. Be wary of those playing the proverbial golden harp of things you wish to hear – comforting lies – and those offering a constant supply of golden eggs, the truth is that our choices have consequences, both personally, locally and internationally.  A great financial plan isn’t wishful thinking, it’s grounded in your values and adapting to the unfolding reality. It is your story.

Over the coming months, hopefully (please) we will see some justice, but beware of giants falling from the sky – they leave an impression.

Some 40 years after its premier, Into The Woods directed by Jordan Fein is currently performed at The Bridge Theatre (near Tower Bridge) and is a marvellous production. Kate Fleetwood plays an impressive Witch with a real ensemble cast. Into the Woods runs until Saturday 30th May 2026. The performance that I saw was fabulous, click this link for (tickets)  and here is the official trailer.

Careful the things you say, children will listen. Careful the things you do,
Children will see and learn. Children may not obey, but children will listen. Children will look to you for which way to turn, to learn what to be. Careful before you say, “Listen to me.” Children will listen.

THE FLYING SCOTSMAN

TODAY’S BLOG

THE FLYING SCOTSMAN

What is it about a steam engine and the Flying Scotsman in particular? As I sat down to enjoy a trip aboard a Pullman coach, my companions and I attempted to unpick what was the nub of the attraction. After all, we had taken a train from a station close to home simply to take another train journey back into the Surrey hills, where we had just come from. This was, to put it bluntly, a journey back to where we started, simply for the sake of it. This reminded me of my own childhood and going for a drive with my father, just for the fun of it.  He used a phrase “We are going there and back to see how far it is” which is something his own father used to say to him. My dad was one of the few people in his street whose family owned a car, the days when the roads were about as busy as the Scottish Highlands, or as my daughters used to say when they were small, when the dinosaurs were around…

For all our discussion, we still didn’t really identify quite what made this steam trip so special, which it was. Something elemental about water, fire and steam? Perhaps nostalgia and the various cultural references to steam engines? A simpler way of life? The noise, smell and sense of occasion? The sense of travelling with style? Perhaps all of those or none of them. What was certainly disarmingly charming was the smiles, waves and cheers that greeted “us” along the route. People of all ages had come to bear witness to this now rare event, sharing in the collective experience, contributing to it.

Old Technology

The steam engine is very obviously old technology. It was vital and pivotal in the industrial revolution and therefore Britain’s role in moving the world forwards. Today it is largely for the amusement of enthusiasts, but most of us probably have a fond regard for this rather nostalgic, romantic form of transport, with a sense of stepping into a story from Agatha Christie.

I found myself wondering about the different ticket classes for the 475 passengers, some of whom had a basic carriage and brought a picnic, whilst others sank into Pullman coach armchairs, enjoying canapés, champagne, and a three-course meal with wine.  Yet this would be similar on aeroplanes, or contemporary trains… or frankly almost any service. We were all being pulled along the same track at the same speed. None of us were in control of the engine or actually aboard the Scotsman. Our experiences were similar but rather different. We all arrived at our final destination at the same time, on time, but perhaps in different states of rest.

Life is a Journey

Regularly we all see adverts that play on the idea that life is about the journey not the destination, this is a truth, but how we decide to experience the journey may well impact how we feel when we finally arrive.

The idea of a journey as a metaphor often used within financial services. Indeed I often describe it as such and talk of “course correction”. Yet in practice a good plan is simply mapping out where you wish to go, the method of travel may vary and perhaps alter, the speed, comfort and experience of the journey can be tailored to suit most budgets. The key is making sure you are not simply going around in circles and on your own path. However, one inescapable reality, is that a financial plan invariably begins at home and ends at home.

Life is journey… and the new Momondo viral ad

Life is a journey and that new viral ad

I came across a powerful new advert, shared within social media.  This seems like perfect timing for the message of a common humanity as we are only a few days away from voting about continued membership of the European Union, a battle that seems largely to hinge upon immigration and border control, which is fairly odd given that when asked about immigrants most of those opposed seem to always cite people from Syria, Africa (apparently many think this is a country rather than a continent), Pakistan or India… which I believe are still some distance outside of the EU, but hey let’s not confuse ranting with facts.

There is no doubting that it has a great value as a message. However after digging around a little, it seems that all is not quite as it appears. For starters, there’s something to sell. There are actors, not samples of the general population and in fact, DNA is not quite so straight-forward. As I advise some fairly senior medical people, I’ve also asked for some thoughts about it… from a professional medical perspective.

However, that doesn’t undermine the value of the message, we are all connected.

Here is that viral ad…
